The Bullmastiff owes its origins by cross breeding 60% of the English Mastiff and 40% of the Bulldog in England during 1800’s. In the olden days, this breed was used to protect animal farms from thieves. Trained not to bite the thieves, they were primarily used as watchdogs that raised an alarm to any intrusion. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1934.

Bullmastiff is a large breed with a powerful body frame. It has a well proportioned head with an intelligent expression; a short muzzle; medium sized eyes; high-set V shaped ears carried close to the cheeks; a black nose with flared nostrils; pendulous lips with canine teeth having a level or a slightly undershot bite. It has a straight or a slightly curved tail which tapers towards the end and is always carried downwards. The forelegs are straight, with a slight curve outward while the hindlegs are strong and broad. It has a short dense coat which can be fawn, brindle or red in color.

This dog breed is clam, even tempered and extremely loyal to its master. It is an intelligent and a very agile dog, which makes it a great watchdog. Aggressive when provoked, it does not have a tendency to bite very often. However, it is strong enough to catch hold of an intruder, pin him down to the floor and hold him there for long. Although easy going and affectionate, this dog breed can be difficult to train if not trained at an early age. A firm, although not harsh, authority is needed to train them properly, else things may get out of control. This dog breed must be taught to socialize at an early age else it can become aggressive towards other dogs and strangers. This dog breed makes for a great companion dog, although it is not meant for people who are overtly pampering with their dogs. Being a calm breed, it makes for a great apartment dog since it has a tendency to be lazy most of the times.

The Bullmastiff sheds very little hair. Its short, dense and rough coat is easy to maintain. Brushing once in a week with a firm bristle brush is sufficient. It should be bathed only when necessary using a mild shampoo. However, extra care should be taken of its feet since it is a heavy breed and a lot of pressure is put on the feet. Regular trimming of the nails is advised to avoid injuries.

Daily long walk is required keep this dog healthy both physically and mentally. Lack of exercise may create behavioral problem in the dog and can also make it overweight. It tends to gain weight quickly so should not be overfed. Small frequent meals are recommended instead of a large meal. It is sensitive to very high or very low temperatures, so care should be taken when taking them out.
